Energy-Saving Technology at Business-Related Buildings

Purpose of Constructing This Database

In Japan, energy-saving technology has been showing many good results as an important measure not only to reduce the emission of air pollutants but also to reduce the emission of gases that cause global warming since the oil shocks of the 1970s. It is one of the most important contributions, which Japan should focus on, to transmit the information to the rest of the world including developing countries and support the construction of energy-saving system by technology transfer to those countries. Under "The Research Committee for Energy-saving Technology in Business-related Buildings" (Chief: Professor Minoru Mizuno, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University), the Global Environment Centre Foundation, GEC, has been collecting information concerning energy-saving technologies in commercial buildings and those energy-saving buildings. The reason for focusing on commercial buildings is based on the concept that commercial buildings in each country have much in common and the information is of high utility value, different from residential buildings at the same time energy consumption in those buildings is high.

We have been constructing this database based on these perspectives with a view to upgrading and improvement receiving new information and opinions from various sources in the future.

We hope that this database will be utilized to the full both at home and abroad and contribute to environmental conservation.

Energy-Saving Buildings

Data on newly constructed buildings were collected mainly by questionnaire surveys. Here are the subjects of the surveys.

  1. Buildings that received the "Environment and Energy-Saving Architecture Award" from the Institute for Building Environment Energy Conservation
  2. Buildings that received the "Technology Award in the Building Equipment Division" from the Society of Heating, Air Conditioning and Sanitary Engineering of Japan
  3. Buildings introduced as energy-saving model cases in various journals and bulletins
Some of the data on renovated buildings were model cases of ESCO (Energy Service Company) project, at the Energy Conservation Center, Japan, at the same time they were collected by questionnaire surveys to general design offices, facility design offices, and general construction companies.
