Air Pollution Continuous Monitoring Technology in Japan
Summarizing and utilizing data

3. Utilization of measurement values

3.2 Osaka City Government

To meet the objectives of continuous monitoring of air pollution, monitored data are used to determine whether the concentration of air pollution complies with environmental standards. Monitored data are also used for the high concentration emergency measures. Monitored values help greatly, in the promotion of comprehensive measures to prevent air pollution.

- Assessing the air-pollution situation and its conformance with environmental standards.

- Using monitored values during emergency situations, such as a photochemical smog emergency.

- Monitored values are used in Osaka's basic environmental plan, in the plan to prevent automobile pollution, and as basic data for managing the progress of these plans.

- Monitored values are stored in Osaka's environmental information processing system and used in pollution analysis, diffusion calculation, etc.

- Monitored values are provided to various organizations as data to aid their environmental assessment.

- Monitored values are given to the environmental learning center and used to create various diagrams and tables to aid environmental learning at the center. (The diagrams and tables can be shown by means of a large light projector in the environmental information center.)

- Monitored values are used for a monthly report air pollution conditions provided to each of public health centers in Osaka city, and they are included in environmental data provided in answer to various complaints.

- Monitored data obtained at the stationary-source monitoring station are used in the application of regulations to control pollution.
